Zauberball Sock Yarn- I’m in love!


I have joined a group on Facebook called Nadelspiel. It’s a German group about knitting and crochet etc and there I have always seen people talk about a Zauberball. So I got nosey and decided to google it and see what all the hype is about and OMG I was in love.

A Zauberball is a ball of sock yarn in the most amazing colours. You can get them in all sorts of combinations and not just use them for socks. See below what I have come up with.

It’s not finished yet as I am waiting for more yarn to come in at my local shop but yes, it will be a gorgeous shawl once it’s finished. Thinking about working in some beads around the edges, just not sure on the colour. Advice always welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

So if you are now just as curious as I got when I heard of the Zauberball then just have a little google for your nearest dealer.

One word of warning though, the yarn is pretty thin so it’s more something for patient knitters and crocheters, but the colour changes are so much fun that the time just flies past.


Ok, so I’m back…..


Hey everyone, sorry for not posting for so long, but due to super bad anaemia I have pretty much not been able to do anything over the last month or so.

But now I am back, let’s see what’s new and what’s not…good news is that I have, despite not being able to work out at all, not put much weight back on and I am now starting again at 117.1 kg. I am still feeling pretty dizzy and stuff so I am having to still take it easy and not totally kick the arse out of it in the beginning. I did an hour on the rowing machine for the last two days and it’s left me feeling pretty pooped today, so today is rest day. I wish I had some money at the moment to go back on the low carb stuff for a week or two to get things rolling again, but as I am skint I guess i will have to make do with what I have.

So much for the fitness part of my blog, now to the crafty one…since I was not really able to run around much I started loads of projects and even got one finished lol so keep your eye our for more crochet postings in the next few days… my projects include… Aย Tunisian crochet bag, a granny square top, an entrelac blanket from all my wooly leftovers and a couple of scarves I have in the making one of them being knitted …I hope you will enjoy them as much as much as I am.

Sorry!! So, so busy!


First of all I’d like toย apologiseย to everyone, I have been so wrapped up in craft projects and working out that I have been slacking big time on my blog (Don’t you find it funny how a spellchecker on a Blog highlights the word -blog- as an error, kinda tickles me. But hey, small things…etc.).

So what’s new? I have still not got to try Yoga, which I am so keen to do, but as my mat and my blocks have not arrived yet I have to carry on doing other stuff. One of those “other stuff” is my new rowing machine! which is working me nice and hard and it was a big of a bargain from Argos for only ยฃ149. I have been on it every night so far and my legs and shoulders, not to mention my abs, are absolutely killing me. This is a good thing though, so at least I know I have not been lazy.

Hopefully my yoga mat will get here tomorrow so I can finally start doing that in the mornings. Look out for some more crafty posts in the next few weeks, I have soooo much planned and hope that I will find the time to do it all. Right know I am crocheting a blanket for a friends baby, I am knitting a hat out of the most gorgeous yarn I have ever seen and I have also bought some sewing fabric on ebay (Gotta love ebay). So yes, stay tuned and see what I come up with next ๐Ÿ™‚

Another present for Saru… Crochet in style ;-)


This Christmas me and my friend Saru have decided to only give each other hand-made pressies, as we did not get to see each other over Christmas ours will be this Saturday. Saru has only started with crochet about a year ago so she is not all that well equipped yet, therefore I decided to make her a bag for her hooks. When I started, I had no idea what it was supposed to look like once it was finished, but then I came across a really nice piece of fabric and it kind of all happened from there.

I first wanted to make the closing mechanism (would you still call it a mechanism when it comes to items like this? Oh well you know what I mean) out of ribbons which I wanted to sew at the back of the square bit, soon realised it would be too fiddly if you wanted to quickly put something away, so I went for buttons instead. But once they were on they looked really boring, so I decided to make flowers as their button holes to brighten the whole thing up ( as if the colours wouldn’t be bright enough already).

My sewing, as you can see on the close-ups really could do with refining, but I guess for my first attempt as a grown up (a grown up with terrible eye sight I may add) I don’t think it’s all that bad. But there is definitely some practice needed ( or maybe just more light when I work). Anyhow, there it is… another pressie for Saru! I hope she likes it ๐Ÿ™‚

Saru’s birthday cushion

This is something I did back in October this year for my friend Saru. Her and me are literally hooked on crochet and any other crafty idea that pops into our heads. Saru is a bit of a newbie when it comes to crochet ( I taught her:-) ) so I thought it would be a good idea to kind of turn her cushion into a little sampler, to show her what kind of stitches were possible.

Originally I wanted to make several different granny squares which I would then crochet together but then decided for this huge granny square option instead, as this way I wouldn’t have so many seams to worry about and it might be a little more comfortable when you put your head on it. The yarn I used for this is called smooth DK by King Cole and it really lives up to its name. It is lovely to work with, doesn’t split much, which is something that you really have to look out for when you want you use a yarn for crochet rather than knitting, as it is very annoying when you can’t work as fast as you like because your hook keeps getting caught in the yarn.

As for the stitches, I started off with a simple flower granny square (the instructions for this you will find in a video tutorial below. Thanks eliZZa). and then I just carried on with a double crochet all around, with a few variations like a few popcorn stitches or some drop down stitches to spice things up a little.

I have been crocheting for quite some time but never more than the odd blanket or so. It has only become a real hobby of mine since I met Saru at uni and I found someone who is just as passionate about crafty things as me. While making this cushion I have learned a few things.

1. When doing things like cushions, when you measure them always add a couple of centimetres to allow for the thickness of the item, otherwise you will end up with an open back.

2. When changing colours while crocheting in the round. Change to the new colour on the very last time when you pull the yarn through the last stitch in the previous row. so you already have a loop in the new colour when you chain up for the next row. Failing to do that will result in a not so neat colour change as you can see in the picture of the cushion. Oh well, we live and learn.

Lexi’s Blanky


Here is a little something I did about three months ago. My neighbour’s daughter had a little baby girl and she was very poorly when she was born and they did not know if she would make it or not. When I heard about that I really wanted to do something for her, but as it normally is in situations like these there is not a lot you can do. So I decided the best thing to do is positive thinking and I went and bought some yarn and started this not so little blanket.

For the yarn I chose Super Soft Baby DK from James Brett in white and a little pink for the border. The stitch for the blanket is a simple shell stitch with a single crochet and shell border. The whole thing took me about four weeks to complete and with using the shell stitch you get a nice warm and snuggly blanket.

Thankfully baby Lexi is a tough little girl and is now at home and on the way to recovery ๐Ÿ™‚

Welcome to my little weird and wonderful world! Grab a brew and make yourself comfy…

My name is Mona, I am a 37 year old single mum from the north west of England, a bit of a geek in many areas, with a permanent smile on my face. I have had a few blogs before, but they never really came to much as I was pretty busy over the last few years working full time and doing a degree. So, now that I have a little more time on myย  hands I thought I’d focus a bit more on this as it’s one of the many things on my “Things I’d like to do” list. If only the day had a few more hours, then that list would be so much smaller by now.

I have many interests, so the plan for this blog is to have a little bit of a mixed bunch going on… things like, weight loss blurbs, recipes, craft ideas and projects, music and just general day to day things, with a little rant thrown in every now and again ๐Ÿ™‚ we all need to rant sometimes, right?

My newest adventure is Celebrity Slim! I have tried it once before but ended up having such bad headaches from it that I had to stop. So I thought I’d give it one more go and really stick to the plan and the dreaded 2 -3 liters of water you are supposed to drink in a day. I never realized just quite how difficult it could be to drink 3 liters of water. As a person who loves fresh fruit juices and pop this has been a bit of a challenge. So now I have made a little plan as to how to achieve this. I drink one big mug of herbal tea with my breakfast shake and then I have a 1.5 Liter bottle of water which I drink during work. Only once that is empty I allow myself to drink maybe the odd glass of diet pop. Fruit juices are off limits because they just have too much sugar in it.

I have just got through my first day on CS and it kind of makes you stop and think about how much you actually depend on carbs. As mentioned previously, I love fruit juices and another weakness of mine is pasta, not to mention chocolate. My eldest came home with a Terry’s chocolate orange today and boy, how chuffed was I when I found out that 2 pieces of that had less than 10g of carbs ๐Ÿ˜€ On CS the only snacks you are allowed are to be less than 10g of carbs in 100g. Ok, I know that two pieces don’t weigh 100g but it still is not a high amount of carbs, so I ate it and enjoyed it. I am sure the scales will tell me if this was a clever thing to do or not.

Anyhow, this is me ๐Ÿ™‚ I am hoping to keep you posted on the CS progress and many other things that you might find of interest. Please feel free to say hi or leave me some feedback and suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚
